There was great success for the Marist in Gael Linn’s prestigious “Abair” Irish Public Speaking competition on Wednesday 3rd February. Robert Mee-Lucey and Caitlín Rooney took 1st and 2nd place in the Junior Section, while Shane Durnin took 1st place in the Senior Section, in what was a hotly contested competition involving schools from across the region.
Competitors in the Junior Section had to speak about a topical issue for three minutes each, while competitors in the Senior Section spoke for four minutes each. Robert spoke about ‘Teifigh’ / ‘Refugees’, Caitlín spoke about ‘Na Tuilte’ / ‘The Floods’, while Shane poked fun at Donald Trump’s campaign to be the next president of the USA.
The speakers excelled on the day, receiving high praise from the judges and will now proceed to the final of the competition following their unprecedented success. Comhghairdeas mór – maith sibh!
