College Awareness Week

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As part of a college awareness initiative led by the guidance department, TY students in St Mary’s College spent a morning in Trinity College this Tuesday. Fortunately, two former Marist students hold prominent positions in this revered institute. Dr Seán Duffy Professor of Medieval History and Shane Rice who is currently President of the Student’s Union were happy to meet the students and bring them on a tour of the university. The visit included the old and newer buildings and the conferring hall where examinations are sat, and students conferred. Having enjoyed an informative visit, the group then walked over to Dublin Castle where they participated in a Department of Education Initiative called Languages Connect.
This innovative programme highlighted the importance of learning modern foreign languages as a way of strengthening our global connections and improving young people’s chances of accessing fulfilling employment.
The first part of the programme included first-hand accounts from a diverse group of professionals who had successfully used languages to gain rewarding employment. These included a well-known Leinster rugby player who has moved to France to further his career, a Detective who used Spanish in his work in the Drug Squad and an engineer who gained employment in an international company because he had German.
Students were then invited to sample food from all over the world and to take part in a wide range of language related workshops. The day afforded students a wonderful opportunity to spend time in two of Dublin’s most iconic buildings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid grid_id=”vc_gid:1543176738052-09a2e62e-20ed-7″ include=”10636,10635,10634″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
