Debating and Public Speaking are greatly encouraged in St. Mary’s College and students at all levels are given the opportunity to participate in related competitions and activities during the year. First year English students compete annually in an MEA (Marist Educational Authority) interschools public speaking competition where Marist schools from throughout the country pit themselves against each other. Participation in these activities help to develop students’ communication skills and also encourages them to form and express opinions. The school recognises outstanding achievement in this field with the awarding of the annual Public Speaking award at the school’s Prize-giving ceremony.
Our school magazine is an important part of documenting student life in the Marist. Transition year students contribute greatly to the Magazine and meet weekly with the co-ordinating teachers to produce the yearly publication. The magazine details the various events that have taken place during the year along with student achievements and news. Students contribute greatly to the end production and are encouraged to write articles for the publication. This gives them first hand writing and journalistic experience as well as the reward of seeing their finished work in print.
